Why We Run from God?

It’s a strange thing, isn’t it? We say we want purpose, peace, and truth, yet when God calls, many of us run. Some run for years, some for a lifetime, avoiding the very One who created them, loves them, and longs to bring them home. But why do we run? What drives us to flee from the One who offers life?

1. Fear of Surrender

At the heart of running from God is often the fear of losing control. We like to be in charge of our own lives, making our own choices, determining our own future. But surrendering to God means yielding to His will, trusting that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). The fear of the unknown, of giving up our own desires, makes us hesitate, sometimes even rebel.

2. Shame and Guilt

Many run because they feel unworthy. Like Adam and Eve hiding after their sin (Genesis 3:8-10), we assume God is angry, waiting to punish us. Shame keeps us distant, convinced that we must clean ourselves up before we come to Him. But the truth is, we can never make ourselves worthy, only Jesus can. He calls us to come as we are, broken and weary, and find grace in Him (Matthew 11:28).

3. Love for the World

Some flee because they love their sin. They enjoy the pleasures of this world and don’t want to let go. The rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-22 walked away from Jesus because his wealth meant more to him than eternal life. Many today make the same choice, clinging to temporary pleasures rather than surrendering to the eternal joy found in Christ.

4. Deception and Doubt

The enemy has been whispering lies since the beginning: Did God really say? (Genesis 3:1). Many run because they have been deceived into believing that God is not good, that He is restrictive rather than freeing. They doubt His love, His power, or even His existence. But the truth is, nothing apart from Him will ever satisfy (John 6:35).

5. Pain and Disappointment

Life is hard, and suffering often causes people to turn away from God rather than to Him. When prayers go unanswered or tragedy strikes, some assume that God has abandoned them. But in reality, He is closest to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Running from Him in pain only deepens the wounds, running to Him brings healing.

6. The Call Feels Too Big

God often calls us to things we feel unprepared for, just as He did with Moses (Exodus 4:10-12) and Jonah (Jonah 1:1-3). The weight of His calling can feel overwhelming, and instead of stepping out in faith, we run in fear. But God never calls us to something He won’t equip us for. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The Way Back

No matter how far we run, God never stops pursuing us. Like the father in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), He is waiting with open arms, ready to receive us the moment we turn back. His grace is greater than our failures, His love deeper than our rebellion.

If you’ve been running from God, stop. Turn around. He’s not waiting to condemn you, He’s waiting to embrace you. The peace you’re searching for is only found in Him.

Will you keep running, or will you come home?
