Testing the Spirits: Discernment in an Age of Deception

A Study from First Epistle of John 4:1–6 (AMP)

There is a growing problem in the modern church that many believers either ignore or are afraid to address.

Voices claiming to speak for God are everywhere.

Pastors, prophets, teachers, influencers, and self-proclaimed spiritual leaders fill pulpits, stages, podcasts, and social media feeds.

Some speak truth.

Many do not.

This is not a new problem. The early church faced the same issue, which is why the apostle John wrote a direct and urgent warning to believers.

In 1 John 4:1–6, he gives one of the clearest instructions in the entire Bible on spiritual discernment.

The Command: Do Not Believe Every Spirit

1 John 4:1 (AMP)

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit [speaking through a self-proclaimed prophet]; instead test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets and teachers have gone out into the world.”

Notice the first instruction.

Do not believe every spirit.

The Bible never tells believers to be gullible. It tells them to be discerning.

John does not say false teachers might appear.

He says many false prophets have already gone out into the world.

This means deception is not rare.

It is common.

Testing the spirits means examining teaching, prophecy, and spiritual claims to see if they align with the truth of God’s Word.

A message may sound passionate.

It may be emotionally powerful.

It may even appear supernatural.

But if it does not agree with Scripture, it is not from God.

The First Test: What Do They Say About Jesus?

1 John 4:2–3 (AMP)

“By this you know and recognize the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges and confesses [the fact] that Jesus Christ has actually come in the flesh [as a man] is from God… and every spirit that does not confess Jesus… is not of God; this is the spirit of the antichrist.”

John immediately reveals the central test of spiritual truth.

What does the message say about Jesus Christ?

True teaching affirms the real Christ revealed in Scripture:

  • Jesus Christ came in the flesh.

  • He is the Son of God.

  • He is both fully God and fully man.

  • He is the only Savior.

False teaching almost always begins by distorting who Jesus is.

Sometimes this distortion is obvious.

Other times it is subtle.

Some teachings reduce Jesus to merely a moral teacher.

Others portray Him as a spiritual guide but remove His authority.

Some preach a version of Jesus that never confronts sin and never calls people to repentance.

But when Christ is redefined, the gospel itself becomes corrupted.

John says plainly that teachings which deny the true Christ operate under the spirit of antichrist.

That spirit was already active in John’s day, and it is still active today.

The Assurance: The Spirit Within Believers

After warning about deception, John immediately encourages believers.

1 John 4:4 (AMP)

“Little children (believers, dear ones), you are of God and you belong to Him and have already overcome them… because He who is in you is greater than he (Satan) who is in the world.”

This verse is often quoted, but it carries powerful context.

John is speaking about overcoming false spirits and false teachers.

Believers are not defenseless against deception.

Those who truly belong to God have the Holy Spirit living within them. The Spirit gives discernment, conviction, and the ability to recognize truth.

The enemy may attempt to deceive, but he does not have the final authority.

The Spirit of God is greater.

Why False Teaching Gains Followers

John explains another reality that is easy to observe even today.

1 John 4:5 (AMP)

“They [who teach twisted doctrine] are of the world and belong to it; therefore they speak from the viewpoint of the world and the world listens to them.”

False teaching spreads easily because it appeals to worldly desires.

Messages that promise comfort without repentance often attract large audiences.

Teachings that avoid confronting sin become popular.

Messages that affirm culture instead of challenging it gain applause.

When a message aligns with the world’s values, the world welcomes it.

But popularity is not proof of truth.

The world listening to a message should sometimes cause believers to pause and ask an important question:

Is this truly the voice of God, or the voice of the world?

The Final Test: Who Listens to the Truth

John concludes this passage with a powerful distinction.

1 John 4:6 (AMP)

“We [who teach God’s word] are from God; whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”

The dividing line is clear.

Those who know God respond to His truth.

Those who reject truth reveal that they are not listening to God’s voice.

This does not mean believers will understand everything perfectly. But it does mean that the Spirit of God leads His people toward truth, not away from it.

Discernment Is Not Judgmentalism

Some people argue that questioning teachings or testing spiritual claims is “judgmental.”

But Scripture commands believers to test what they hear.

Discernment is not about attacking people.

It is about protecting the truth of the gospel and guarding the church from deception.

Without discernment, error spreads unchecked.

Without discernment, believers become vulnerable to manipulation.

Without discernment, the church loses its ability to distinguish truth from lies.

A Wake-Up Call for the Church

The warning from John is just as relevant today as it was when he first wrote it.

Many voices claim to represent God.

But not every voice is from Him.

Some preach truth.

Others preach messages that sound spiritual but slowly lead people away from the gospel.

That is why Scripture tells believers to test the spirits.

Not out of fear.

Not out of suspicion.

But out of devotion to the truth of Christ.

The Question Every Believer Must Ask

In a world full of spiritual voices and religious messages, one question remains essential:

Are we listening to the Spirit of truth… or the spirit of error?
