Fasting, according to the Bible, is the voluntary abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. It is a time of humbling ourselves before God, denying the flesh, and focusing on His presence. When combined with prayer, fasting becomes a powerful tool for spiritual growth and breakthrough.
The Bible presents two primary types of fasts:
The Complete (Liquid) Fast – Abstaining from all food and consuming only liquids, such as water.
The Daniel Fast – Abstaining from rich foods, eating only vegetables, fruits, and drinking water.
Fasting Is Always About Food in the Bible
There is no biblical basis for fasting from anything other than food. While some people today choose to "fast" from entertainment, social media, or other distractions, the Bible only speaks of fasting in terms of food. Every biblical example of fasting involves giving up food to seek God.
Biblical Examples of Fasting
1. The Complete (Liquid) Fast
Moses' 40-Day Fast – Moses fasted for forty days on Mount Sinai while receiving the Ten Commandments from God. (Exodus 34:28)
Jesus' 40-Day Fast – Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus fasted for forty days in the wilderness, resisting temptation and preparing for His mission. (Matthew 4:2)
Esther’s Three-Day Fast – Queen Esther and the Jews fasted with no food or water for three days, seeking God’s intervention for deliverance from destruction. (Esther 4:16)
2. The Daniel Fast
Daniel’s 10-Day Test – Daniel and his companions refused the king’s rich food and ate only vegetables and drank water to remain faithful to God. (Daniel 1:12-15)
Daniel’s 21-Day Fast – Daniel fasted from meat, wine, and delicacies, seeking understanding and an answer from God. At the end of 21 days, an angel appeared with a message. (Daniel 10:2-3)
Why Prayer and Fasting Are Powerful
1. It Draws Us Closer to God
Fasting removes distractions and allows us to seek God wholeheartedly. James 4:8 says, "Come close to God [with a contrite heart] and He will come close to you." (AMP)
2. It Brings Spiritual Breakthrough
Some spiritual battles can only be won through fasting and prayer. Jesus said, “But this kind of demon does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21, AMP)
3. It Brings Wisdom and Guidance
Fasting helps us seek God’s will in difficult decisions. Daniel fasted for revelation, and God answered. (Daniel 10:12)
4. It Strengthens Our Spirit
Fasting disciplines the flesh and builds spiritual endurance. As Jesus demonstrated in the wilderness, fasting prepares us for greater spiritual battles.
5. It Leads to Repentance and Renewal
The people of Nineveh fasted in repentance, and God spared their city. (Jonah 3:5-10) Fasting humbles us and helps align our hearts with God’s will.
How to Fast Biblically
Set a Purpose – Decide why you are fasting (spiritual renewal, breakthrough, wisdom, etc.).
Choose a Biblical Fast – Either a complete (liquid) fast or a Daniel fast.
Spend More Time in Prayer and Scripture – Replace meal times with seeking God.
Stay Spiritually Alert – Expect challenges, but stay focused on God’s presence.
Break the Fast Wisely – After fasting, gradually reintroduce food to your body.
