Definition of Excellence
According to the dictionary, excellence is:
1. The quality of being outstanding or extremely good.
2. An outstanding feature or quality.
Excellence refers to surpassing ordinary standards, striving for the highest level of quality, and consistently improving in a particular area.
Excellence in the Bible
In the Bible, excellence is not merely about skill, performance, or achievement, it is about living a life that honors God. Biblical excellence is rooted in obedience, faithfulness, and wholehearted devotion to God.
Key Scriptures on Excellence
Colossians 3:23 (AMP)"Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men."→ Excellence in the Christian life means doing everything as if it is for God, not just for human recognition.
Daniel 6:3 (AMP)"Then this Daniel [because of the extraordinary spirit within him] began distinguishing himself among the commissioners and the satraps, and the king planned to appoint him over the entire realm."→ Daniel was excellent because he had an "extraordinary spirit"—he was faithful, disciplined, and devoted to God.
Proverbs 22:29 (AMP)"Do you see a man skilled and experienced in his work? He will stand [in honor] before kings; He will not stand before obscure men."→ Excellence is tied to diligence and skill, which bring favor and opportunities.
Philippians 4:8 (AMP)"Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]."→ Biblical excellence starts in the mind—thinking on things that align with God's truth.
What Excellence Looks Like in a True Christian's Life
Loving God with All Your Heart
A Christian walking in excellence prioritizes their relationship with God (Matthew 22:37).
They seek to know Him deeply and obey His commands.
Living a Life of Integrity
They are the same in public and private (Proverbs 10:9).
They honor their commitments and are trustworthy.
Serving Others with Excellence
They serve others selflessly, whether in ministry, work, or daily life (Mark 10:45).
Their service is not half-hearted but done with joy and diligence.
Being a Good Steward of Time, Talent, and Resources
They use their gifts to glorify God (1 Peter 4:10-11).
They work hard and do not waste their time on meaningless pursuits (Ephesians 5:15-16).
Striving for Holiness and Righteousness
They pursue a life that is set apart for God (1 Peter 1:15-16).
They resist compromise and remain faithful to God's truth.
Growing Spiritually
They continually seek wisdom and understanding in God's Word (2 Peter 1:5-8).
They strive to be more Christlike every day.
Enduring Trials with Faith and Joy
They do not give up when faced with challenges but trust God’s plan (James 1:2-4).
Their faith is steadfast even in hardships.
Excellence in the Christian life is not about perfection but about faithfulness, diligence, and wholehearted devotion to God. A true Christian does everything as unto the Lord, seeks to honor Him in all areas of life, and continuously grows in wisdom, character, and service. Excellence is about giving God our very best—not just in skills or performance but in obedience, love, and commitment to His kingdom.
