The One Verse That Keeps Me Awake at Night (In a Good Way) (Sermon)

“Moreover it is required of stewards that one be found faithful.”

1 Corinthians 4:2

I read that a few years ago and haven’t been able to shake it since. Because here’s the thing: one day every single one of us is going to stand in front of Jesus and open our hands. Not to show how much we owned, but to show what we did with what He gave us.

And the only question on the scorecard is “Were you faithful?”

Not “Were you successful?”

Not “Were you impressive?”

Not “Did you keep it all safe?”

Faithful.

Everything you touch right now is on loan. The hours in your day, the money in your account, the gift nobody else has quite like you do, the influence, the kids, the job, the health, the breath in your lungs. None of it has your name on the title. It all says Property of the King in fine print.

That truth used to stress me out until I realized it’s actually sets me free. I’m not the owner; I’m the manager. I don’t have to create it, protect it forever, or make it grow in my own strength. I just have to handle it the way the Owner would if He were in my shoes.

So let’s talk about the three big buckets He’s watching most.

First, your time. You get 24 hours today. No more, no less. Rich people can’t buy an extra one. Smart people can’t invent one. When it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Ephesians 5:16 says to redeem the time because the days are evil. Jesus only had three years of public ministry and still made time to pray before sunrise, feed crowds, disciple twelve ordinary guys, and rest when His body needed it. He never looked busy; He looked purposeful. I want to live like that. Less scrolling, more kneeling. Less binge-watching, more Bible-breathing.

Second, your talents. God didn’t give you that voice, that brain, that skill set, that personality so you could climb a ladder and die at the top. He gave it to you so the body of Christ could be healthier because you showed up. Joseph could have used his administrative gift to get rich and retire early. Instead he used it to save nations and keep God’s covenant people alive. The musician who leads worship on Sunday morning instead of chasing a record deal is doing the exact same thing Joseph did. Same gift, same heart: “This doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the Kingdom.”

Third, your treasure. Money is the easiest litmus test of who’s really on the throne. Proverbs 3:9 says honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce. That widow in Mark 12 dropped in two pennies and Jesus called it the biggest offering of the day because it was literally everything she had. I’ve watched businessmen who make seven figures write the first check every month to the kingdom and sleep like babies. I’ve watched people who make forty grand a year grip the ten percent like it’s oxygen and wonder why they’re always choking. The math is spiritual, not financial. When we give God the first, He has room to bless the rest.

Here’s the part that messes me up in the best way: God is never looking for ability; He’s looking for availability. He’s not asking you to be awesome. He’s asking you to be faithful with whatever is in your hand right now. The two pennies, five loaves, one lunch, one song, one prayer, one hour. Just be faithful with it.

Because the same God who notices when a sparrow falls is keeping receipts on every minute, every gift, every dollar you steward. And one day He’s going to open the books and say, “Look what did you do with what I gave you?”

I don’t want to shrug and mumble, “I kept it safe.”

I want to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful over a little; now come share your Master’s happiness.”

So tomorrow when the alarm goes off, when the paycheck hits, when the gift starts burning in your chest, remember: you’re not the owner. You’re the manager.

And the Owner is coming back.

Let’s make Him proud.

What’s one area (time, talent, or treasure) where you feel God asking you to level up your faithfulness this week? Drop it below. I’m praying we all hear “well done” when it matters most.
