The One Time the Disciples Got Schooled (And It Wasn’t About the Demon) (Sermon)

I love how the disciples pulled Jesus aside after the whole thing went sideways. They’re embarrassed. Frustrated. They had cast out demons before. People had been set free left and right. But this one kid? This one stubborn spirit? Nothing. Zero. Nada.

So they ask the question every one of us has whispered in a hospital hallway or a 2 a.m. prayer that feels like it’s hitting the ceiling:

“Jesus… why couldn’t we do it?”

And Jesus doesn’t pat them on the back and say, “Oh, that was a Level 9000 demon, guys. Totally understandable.”

He doesn’t blame the devil’s strength, the boy’s condition, or even the father’s faith.

He looks them dead in the eye and says, “Because of your unbelief.”

Ouch.

Then He drops the line everybody quotes but few understand:

“But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.”

We’ve all heard preachers say that means some demons are senior-level, extra-spicy, boss-battle demons that require the deluxe spiritual package to defeat. But read it again. Jesus had already given these same disciples authority over every demon (Luke 10:19). There is no demon too strong for the name of Jesus.

So what was “this kind” that only comes out by prayer and fasting?

Unbelief.

This kind of unbelief—this stubborn, sneaky, watered-down faith mixed with doubt—doesn’t go out any other way.

The demon wasn’t the real boss fight. The doubt in the disciples’ hearts was.

Jesus basically told them, “You didn’t need more power. You needed less unbelief.”

And the only way to drive out unbelief is to starve it with prayer and fasting.

Prayer pulls your eyes off the storm and locks them on the One who walks on it.

Fasting shuts up the flesh that keeps whispering, “Yeah, but what if it doesn’t work this time?”

Together they create an environment where unbelief can’t breathe.

That’s why Jesus said even mustard-seed faith—tiny, pure, undiluted faith—can tell a mountain to jump in the ocean and it will. The issue is never the size of your faith. It’s the mixture. Faith plus doubt is like gunpowder plus water. It looks the same until you try to light it.

So if you’ve got a mountain that’s laughing at your prayers…

If you’ve got a situation that keeps mocking every scripture you throw at it…

If you’ve been declaring and decreeing and nothing’s moving…

Stop blaming the mountain.

Start fasting the unbelief.

Because once that junk is gone, even your little faith becomes lethal.

The boy got delivered the moment Jesus showed up—not because Jesus had bigger faith, but because Jesus had zero unbelief.

And that same Jesus lives in you.

So the next time something stubborn shows up and refuses to move, don’t ask “Why is this demon so strong?”

Ask “Where did this unbelief come from, and how fast can I starve it out?”

Prayer and fasting aren’t the deluxe plan.

They’re the detox that gets the poison of doubt out of your faith.

Get clean.

Get hungry.

Get the unbelief out.

Then watch your mustard seed start moving mountains again.

What’s the mountain you’re tired of staring at? Drop it below. I’m praying (and fasting) with you that every trace of “this kind” gets cast out today. The breakthrough isn’t coming. It’s already here, once unbelief leaves the room.
