Contending For The Faith In A Compromised Church (Sermon)

A Wake Up Call From The Book Of Jude

“Beloved, I was compelled to write to you urgently appealing that you fight strenuously for the faith that was once delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed… ungodly persons who distort the grace of our God into immoral freedom and deny our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” Jude 1:3 to 4 AMP

The church today is facing a crisis, and most people in it do not even recognize the danger. Imagine a house on fire but everyone inside is sitting on the couch as if nothing is wrong. That is what is happening in many churches. Compromise is burning everywhere, but few discern the flames.

Jude wrote with urgency. He wanted to speak about salvation and encouragement, but something more pressing demanded his voice. False teachers had slipped into the church, twisting grace, excusing sin, and leading believers away from truth.

Sound familiar?

It should.

We are living it now.

Repentance has been replaced with comfort.

Holiness has been replaced with entertainment.

Truth has been replaced with feelings.

And grace has been turned into a license to live any way we want.

Jude’s warning is not ancient. It is prophetic for our generation.

The Call To Contend For The Faith

The faith we stand on is not adjustable. It is not to be reshaped by culture, trends, or opinions.

It was delivered once.

It stands forever.

And Jude tells us to fight for it because:

  • False teachers have crept in unnoticed.

  • They do not show up waving warning signs.

  • They blend in.

  • They look spiritual.

  • Some even sound biblical while promoting lies.

  • They distort grace into permission to sin.

Today many preach a grace that requires no repentance, no holiness, and no surrender. But grace empowers us to change, not to remain bound. They deny Jesus by rejecting His authority. Many accept His love but refuse His lordship.

What This Looks Like Today:

  • Churches preaching prosperity without repentance.

  • Platforms preaching self love but not self denial.

  • Leaders preaching inclusion but ignoring holiness.

  • Congregations entertained but not transformed.

Are we protecting the truth, or have we quietly allowed deception to slip in?

The Danger Of False Teachers

Jude reminds us that judgment comes to those who reject God’s truth:

  • Israel doubted and died in the wilderness.

  • Angels rebelled and were cast into darkness.

  • Sodom embraced sin and faced destruction.

Then he compares false teachers to:

  • Cain – He rejected God’s way.

  • Balaam – He used spiritual influence for money.

  • Korah – He rebelled against God’s authority.

What This Looks Like Today

  • Cain: Churches rejecting Scripture to fit culture.

  • Balaam: Leaders selling truth for profit and fame.

  • Korah: Believers who reject biblical authority to create their own version of Christianity.

Are we following God’s truth or allowing modern thinking to redefine our faith?

The Characteristics Of Apostates

Jude paints a vivid picture of deceivers:

  • Hidden reefs – They look harmless but destroy from underneath.

  • Waterless clouds – They promise refreshing but deliver nothing.

  • Wild waves – They stir chaos and confusion.

  • Wandering stars – They lead others into darkness.

These images describe a church culture filled with charisma but lacking substance.

Today’s false teachers preach:

  • Love without holiness.

  • Blessing without obedience.

  • Destiny without repentance.

  • Motivation without Scripture.

Their sermons fill stadiums but empty souls.

Paul warned this would happen: “For the time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine, but teachers will tell them what they want to hear.” 2Timothy 4:3 to 4

We are living in that time.

Are we being led by the Word of God, or by emotions, personalities, and trends?

The Preservation Of The Faithful

Jude does not only warn us. He gives us a strategy to survive spiritual deception:

Remember the Word

Truth does not change. Scripture is still the standard.

Build up your faith

Study. Learn. Grow. Obey. Live it.

Pray in the Spirit

Human wisdom is powerless without spiritual strength.

Rescue others

Stand for truth. Speak up. Warn those being deceived. Bring people back without compromising your own walk.

What This Looks Like Today:

  • We cannot be passive while truth is being destroyed.

  • We cannot stay silent when souls are being misled.

  • We cannot pretend the battle is not happening.

Are we strengthening our faith and helping others stay grounded?

The Final Victory

Jude closes with hope:

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and make you stand blameless with great joy.” Jude 1:24 to 25

No matter how dark things get, God is still able:

  • Able to keep you

  • Able to guard you

  • Able to strengthen you

  • Able to establish you

  • Able to preserve your faith until the end

Truth may be under attack, but truth will win in the end.

Stand Up And Contend

Jude’s message is clear and urgent.

The church is under attack from within.

False teaching is increasing.

Compromise is spreading.

Deception is multiplying.

What Must We Do?

Examine ourselves – Are we holding to truth or just going with the flow?

Strengthen our faith – Stay in the Word, not worldly ideas.

Call out falsehood – With love, but without fear.

Be ready for resistance – Truth has always been unpopular.

Trust God – He will keep us strong until the end.

If the disciples had to contend for the faith, why would we expect anything less?

This is our generation’s battle.

Will you stand for truth, or will you let deception burn the church from the inside?
